After nearly 18 months of working out and a few boxing/GP sessions, along with coaching from Radner Bearman and Bob (ctrwash) I have a new found enthusiasm for boxing activities. No couch potato here, folks! 😀

Im 59, Masters boxer in senior olympics on occasion. I have been boxing since I was 16 as. Golden Gloves boxer then AAU from 23 on. I have been kickboxing 8 years. Im a certified personal trainet. I also workout 5 days a week. I still spar with way younger men amd women. I box with several guys older tban me. We all wear head, mouth groin and shin ( kickboxing) we arent trying to kill each other, just have a good time in a contred atmosphere. I believe, based on my
own experience, not because I read it in some
publication that yes there are chronic problems caused from body impact, but you can have that from being in a last automobike or work related accident. If yiu are in shape to box and kickbox. Go For It. Life is too short to be worring about a medical issue that might never happen.

The trouble is you cant say you deliberately want a motorbike or work related accident to happen, but boxing is different as we disregard those same risks just for pleasure. Even after a complete brain scan symptoms are easily missed: Chronic Encephalopathy for example takes many years to build up in the brain and is not easy to diagnose before it ravages through... surely as we get older and the more cumulative knocks we take, we have a duty of care to ourselves and others and not pretend that we are still 20 years old?

I agree 100%. To put the gloves and gear on to compete or spar is absolute fun. I’m in the best shape of my life.

A great video with some good moves and which would encourage even oldies like me to take up the sport and enjoy it whilst being careful of being paired against a fitter, younger, blood thirsty maniac whose sole satisfaction was to KO. It is what it is, sparring, and everybody has to begin somewhere regardless of age. What a sensible coach that Ozboxer is. He makes sparring a treat to watch.

I decided at 65 and 176 to get back in boxing shape! Now 66, down to a fitter 145 lbs, seeking fun, safe & sane gloved boxing activities with like minded men near my own 5'8" height/wt!
HMU if planning to visit Atlantic City,NJ/ Philadephia, PA area!

I'm 55. Train 3x a week with a boxing club. An hour's sparring this morning. NOT too old!

If you read the sub-caption it specifies age 60: you still have 5 years to go before time and possible injury begin to catch up on you.

Dementia Pugilistica so common in boxers who are still boxing 10 years after announced retirement. Effects including Alzheimers Disease, increased risk of contre-coup concussion chronic and motor neurone disease similar to encephalopathy, Parkinsons and ALL completely irreversible. So light punching yet technically trained 60 year olds who agree not to go so hard are proven statistically not only to have longer brain lives but can still enjoy their sport even if it is with a titanium implant or from a wheelchair. The choice is yours

Or I could die of something else?

I agree, you could die of something a lot faster and a lot less burdensome and dignified.

I’m not worried about that. I know what I am doing and what I need to do. Yes, there’s a risk, but I have taken the necessary steps to see those risks are minimized.

I am glad that you have this self knowledge and control of the internal working of your body. I freely admit I dont without regular check ups and the british nhs being what it is, well... it could be a case of too little, too late. So I try and minimise my risks too and tone down my sparring a little for the sake of my opponent, his medical and complex legal reasons

I do see my doc at least twice a year (wellness checkup and follow up on my hypothyroidism). Plus, it does not hurt that I am a health care professional.

Flowplayer working again - for now.

Big height advantage there.
Can’t tell at times - how serious he is in sparring with Oz.

Know that it is just sparring - but if in clocked rounds - would love to see Oz take him out.

Is the guy in white on MF or just a guy who wants to mess around in gloves???

Looks good!
Oz is hot in the shorter trunks.

(Flowplayer - as is now usual - locks up on my iPad....).

There are several of us who do compete as a Masters amateur. Plus, I do like to spar or box with those younger than me. 60 is truly the next 40, if you really do the things necessary to accomplish it (diet, exercise, stress reduction).
